The double-page spread format uses brief text, many illustrations, and lengthy captions in very small type. Illustrations include period photographs, engravings, and documents, as well as photos of artifacts such as rifles, flags, and uniforms/5(16).

The "Eyewitness" aspect of the book is rather lacking. It's primarily an account of the Civil War with the occasional Eyewitness War book thrown in. I assumed, from the description that a large part of the content would be excerpts from diaries, letters, etc., but this is very scant/5(98).
